What are you REALLY craving?

The other night, I couldn’t stop thinking about Oreos. I needed oreos. Of course, I didn’t really “need” oreos. In reality I was craving comfort. It had been a hard, hectic day and I wanted to endulge and relax with my oreos. ..........

Emotional eating is probably the toughest obstacle to tackle when it comes to weight loss. It is not an easy thing to overcome. We need to step back and ask ourselves what it is we are really craving and try to fill that craving with something other than sugar and trans fats.

There are two types of hunger: Mind hunger and Body hunger. If you are someone who has spent years going on and off diets, you may not be sure you know how to feel true hunger. We no longer trust the innate wisdom of our biology. If we truly listened to our body, it will tell us when and what we need to eat. Mind hunger, on the other hand, is endless, bottomless, erratic. Eating when you're hungry is not what causes weight gain; you put on pounds when your body has no need for food and you eat anyway.

Listen to your body. When you’ve had enough, stop. And the next time you have an oreo craving, think about what you are really craving. If it’s comfort - talk to a friend, curl up with a good book or watch your favorite television show. The craving will pass and your body will begin to learn to regulate itself, as nature intended.
